PHONE SCAMS
Local residents have been receiving potentially dangerous phone calls from individuals posing as businesses that are trying to help them. Please be careful. Do not give any personal information to these individuals. Do not give your account numbers or the numbers off the bottom of your checks to them.
Example 1:
In one instance our bank customer was told that they were selected to receive a service sponsored by the local ambulance service and all they had to do was give the caller the numbers off the bottom of their checks so that they could get the information sent to them. They were told that once they received the numbers off the bottom of their check they would mail them a packet of information they needed to fill out giving their health information along with a list of medication they take. In turn the company would provide this information to the local ambulance service in the event they had to transport the customer. This way they would receive the best possible care.
Example 2:
In another instance our customer was told that the person calling them was contacted by their bank to clear up a problem with their personal information. The person calling said that one of the checks that the customer had written to a business had been placed on a public computer and their company would help them get their information off the computer and make things safe for them. This company said that they would need the customers account number and personal information to get this taken care of.
When in doubt please call your local bank before discussing any personal information with callers like these. Fraud and Identity theft are two of the largest crimes happening these days. One of the ways to prevent callers from calling your home is to register your phone number with the Do Not Call list. To do this, visit the National Do Not Call Registry website and register your phone number. If you do not have internet access you can call 1-888-382-1222.
